The foil is the most performance-determining component: it defines your flight profile, the range of useful speed, the ease of pumping and your overall feeling on the water. A good foil + board combination always beats a premium board with a mediocre foil.

What matters when choosing a foil:

• Front wing aspect ratio:
  • Low Aspect (LA): soft lift, easy to get up, ideal for beginners. Ex: AK Trek.
  • Medium Aspect (MA): versatile, balance between speed and maneuverability. Ex: AK Tracer.
  • High Aspect (HA): long glide, race, downwind, advanced riders. Ex: AK Plasma.
• Front wing size (cm²): larger gives more lift and easier takeoff; smaller gives more speed and maneuverability.
• Material: aluminum (affordable, heavy), carbon (premium, light, rigid).
• Mast length: 71-75 cm typical; 85-90 cm for race/downwind.

How we recommend it at El Niño Mallorca. For your first foil, prioritize large size and low aspect ratio (easier to get up). Once you're pumping and flying comfortably, increase aspect ratio or reduce size. Compatibility between components (mast + fuselage + wings) varies by brand and generation — always confirm before buying.
