The Starboard ACE Foil Lightning is a complete hydrofoil from Starboard. The foil is the most performance-determining component: it defines the flight profile, your usable speed range, pumping ease and overall feel on the water. A good foil + board combo always beats an expensive board with mediocre foil.
What matters when choosing a foil:
- Front wing aspect ratio:
- Low Aspect (LA): smooth lift, easy to get airborne, ideal for beginners. Ex: AK Trek.
- Medium Aspect (MA): versatile, balance between speed and maneuverability. Ex: AK Tracer.
- High Aspect (HA): long glide, race, downwind, advanced riders. Ex: AK Plasma.
- Front wing size (cm²): larger wing = more lift and easier takeoff; smaller wing = more speed and maneuverability.
- Material: aluminum (affordable, heavy), carbon (premium, light, rigid).
- Mast length: 71-75 cm standard; 85-90 cm for race/downwind.
How we recommend it at El Niño Mallorca. For your first foil, prioritize larger size and low aspect ratio (easier to get airborne). Once you're pumping and flying comfortably, you can progress to higher aspect ratio or smaller size.
